Ever wondered why we wear such a specific uniform in Ballet? From footwear to hairstyle, there are several purposes of correct uniform in class.
Respect
Wearing required uniform shows effort and shows that the dancer is serious about developing their technique and skills within the studio. Each dance school has their own dress or colour code therefore following the dress code is respectful to your school and the teacher taking the class. A uniform consisting of correct footwear, a leotard/ skirt and tights with hair tied back in a bun is traditional. Most of all you are respecting the art form its self. Respect Ballet!
Safety
The uniform we wear in class is designed for safety and practicality. It prevents distraction in the classroom and allows teachers to see dancers alignment and posture which is important - this makes sure us dancers are not putting our bodies under any stress, preventing injury and incorrect techniques and habits.
Correctly fitting leotards and tights allow adequate mobility during class.
Team
It's a great feeling being part of a team, and thats super important in the dance studio. It creates a sense of unity and belonging to the school you are part of. It encourages each dancer to strive to be their best, working hard for not only themselves but their peers too, especially when it comes to group competitions and performances. Correct uniform reduces bullying and anxieties.
Focus
Tidy, correct and neat uniform and hairstyle enables the dancer to focus entirely when in the studio. Hair falling in your face, or loose fitting clothing is a cause of distraction and we all know teachers would not be impressed! Adhering to your schools uniform policy will increase focus and increase productivity.
