Its no secret that exercise makes you feel good. Dance, no matter the style is demanding therefore its totally normal to feel tired, achey and worn out.
Tough class?
Head not in it?
Didn't feel as strong today?
Forgetting choreography?
Feeling under pressure?
It happens, so dont be so hard on yourself.
Instead of going home and feeling sorry for yourself (we get it, its hard not to), feeling put off or completely exhausted it may be a great idea to develop an 'after class routine' and incorporate some dancer self day into your day.
Nourishing meal
Fast food is always quickest and easiest option especially if you are tired or strapped for time. After class your body and mind need to begin recovery to help keep functioning at its optimal. Make sure to be mindful with meal choices and opt for a healthy and filling meal- don't forget to hydrate too!!
Skin Care
Sweating out toxins is great and if you have been working hard in class, you will have done this. Take time after class to wash and follow your skincare routine. Not only is this good for your skin, you'll feel refreshed, clean and ready to rest.
Preperation
Its easy to get home and throw your bag down and forget about it until you need it again. A great habit to adopt is to prepare. Preparing for your next class when returning from home the studio will save time and prevent stress for next time.
Down time
In our opinion - THE MOST IMPORTANT
As much as we love to dance and think about dance, it really is important to break away on rest days.
Relax, catch up with life, take on other activities (active recovery) such as light exercise i.e swimming/ yoga/ pilates / a walk or a run. Ensure you are getting enough sleep each night too.
Reflection
When you step out of the studio, its easy to forget what you have leant. It may be difficult after a tough session but making notes and recording important routines or new steps learnt will help jog your memory and help you feel prepared for class next time.
Our message to you:
Life as a dancer is tiring and at times tough. Adopting an after class routine needs to suit you. Be kind and compassionate to yourself and create a routine that works with your lifestyle.
Remember to look after you. Your body WILL repay you in the studio.
